City program helps first-time buyers

HAYWARD -- Jose and Marilyn Camacho bought their first home in southern Hayward this year with the help of the city's First-Time Homebuyers Program.

"We found our house the first night we looked," said Jose Camacho, who brought a cake to Sam Thompson, the coordinator of the program, as a thank-you present when his escrow closed. The Camachos bought a single-family residence for $323,000 with financial assistance from the program. read more

First-time buyers manage to fulfill their dream despite high prices

Homeownership long seemed a pipe dream to Patricia Ross, a single, working mother of three who paid her apartment rent with a federal subsidy.

But this summer she bought her three-bedroom, two-bath "dream house" in a well-kept neighborhood north of Elk Grove, near Highway 99. The mortgage payment is roughly the same as what it cost her to rent.

Ross is one of many first-time buyers who've found ways to squeeze into the region's housing market despite record prices. In Sacramento County, for example, the median resale price has nearly doubled, to $235,000, since 1998. read more
