Installing Windows in New Construction
Windows are available in numerous shapes, sizes and brands. Local building codes may specify minimum glass and venting required in new construction. Check with your zoning office for required specifications.
New Window Installation:
Check the size of your rough opening; make sure there is at least ¼” clearance on all sides of the window opening.
Remove all packing screws and brackets from the new windows.
Apply a bead of urethane caulk around the outside wall of the rough opening.
Slide the window frame into the rough opening. Set and level the window; most new windows will have a flange on the outer portion to nail securing the window in the opening; use galvanized nails.
Install shims on the inner jamb; make sure the shims are snug but not too tight; check window to make sure it is straight and level in the opening; nail with finish nails.
Check the window for proper operation; make sure all weather seals fit properly.
Insulate around the window with spray foam or fiberglass insulation.
Install casing trim.
