Masonry Coatings and Sealers
“I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down!” said the wolf in the nursery rhyme the Three Little Pigs as he chased the pigs into the most securely built house – the one made of brick.
Brick, veneers, limestone and various other masonry materials are considered to be the most durable building products available. While their durability is renown, it is important to remember that these products and materials are not maintenance free and will deteriorate if not maintained properly.
When building with masonry materials such as brick, after a few years you may notice mortar separation, cracks in surfaces and water seepage. Because masonry materials and products are very porous, all will absorb water after continuous rains. In the colder climates, freezing and thawing of the absorbed water causes separation and deterioration. If unaddressed, the problem will only worsen over time causing more severe leaks and even stone displacement.
The best way to protect these masonry surfaces is with proper maintenance and application of clear penetrating acrylic sealers and coatings. The deteriorated areas should be repaired, remortared, power washed and sealed, on a regular basis, to gain continued longevity of your masonry surface —- and it prevents your house made of brick from becoming a house made of straw!
