Sheathing the Roof
After sub-fascia and rakes have been installed, the next step in continuing your roof structure of your home building is installation of the roof sheathing. Roof sheathing should be a minimum of 9/16” or 5/8” sheathing creates a good structural roof. Using H-clips is highly recommended in all applications. If your rafters have been installed correctly, they should be square to the fascia on the eave and perfectly parallel to the fascia on the rake.
Begin by measuring from the center of the 3rd rafter to the edge of the rake; this will be the size of your first starting sheet of plywood.
When installing this piece of sheathing, make sure you nail in the exact center of the third rafter and on 24” centers on each additional rafter. Mark the exact center of the rafters.
Check your rake to make sure it is straight.
Repeat this process until the first row of sheathing is complete keeping each rafter nail to sheeting on 24” centers.
Start the next row 48” from the start of the first row. As you install each sheet across the roof, stagger the joints or connecting points.
To gain more stability, install H-clips in each 24” space. Install the clips in the spaces where the plywood meets between the trusses.
Continue this pattern over the entire roof; Nail sheathing 6” on center.
Check alignment from the bottom to the top of the roof; remove any excess overhang with a saw.
